하와이 주 호놀룰루 출생)는 미국의 정치인
으로 현직 제44대 대통령이다. 케냐 출신
의 흑인 아버지와 미국 백인 어머니
사이에서 태어난 흑백 혼혈인으로, 2008년
미국 대통령 선거에 민주당 소속으로
출마, 미국 최초로 아프리카계 미국인
출신이자 하와이 출신으로 대통령에 당선되
었으며, 2009년 1월 20일부터 임기를
시작하였다. 2005년 1월 일리노이 주 출신
미국 상원 의원으로 재직하다가 2008년
11월 대통령 선거 이후에 의원직을 사임하였다.
콜롬비아 대학교와 하버드 대학교 법학대학
원을 졸업하였으며,
이 곳 '하버드 로 리뷰'의 흑인 최초
편집장으로 활동하였다. 법학 박사 학위를
따기 전에 시카고에서 지역사회 조직가로
활동하였다. 그는 시카고에서 민권 변호사
로 일하였으며 시카고 대학교 법학대학원에
서 1992년부터 2004년까지 헌법학을 가르쳤다.
1997년에서 2004년 사이에 그는 일리노이
상원에서 3선하였다. 2000년 미국 하원
선거에서 의석을 얻지 못한 그는 2004
년에 상원 선거에 출마하였다.
2004년 3월 민주당 예비 선거에서
그가 승리하였으며, 2004년 7월 민주당
전당 대회의 그가 맡은 기조 연설이 황금
시간대에 TV로 방영되는 등 일리노이
출신 상원 의원 선거 유세를 하면서 여러
사건을 통해 그는 전국적인 관심을 끌었다.
2007년 2월에는 대통령 선거에
출마하였는데 2008년 민주당 대
통령 후보 예비 선거에서 힐러
리 클린턴과 치열한 유세전을
벌인 끝에 그는 민주당 대선 후
보로 지명되었다. 2008년 대통
령 선거에서 그는 공화당 후보
인 존 매케인을 누르고 대통령
에 당선되어 2009년 1월 20일
에 미국 대통령으로 취임하였
다. 그리고 2009년에는 노벨 평화상을 수상하였다.
2012년 11월 6일 열린 2012년 미국 대통령
선거에선 민주당의 재선 후보로 지명되어
밋 롬니 후보를 332 대 206으로 누르고 연임에 성공하였다.

(born August 4, 1961)
is the 44th and current President of
the United States.
He is the first African American to
hold the office. Obama previously
served as a United States Senator from
Illinois, from January 2005 until he
resigned following his victory in the
2008 presidential election.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama is a
graduate of Columbia University and
Harvard Law School, where he was the
president of the Harvard Law Review. He
was a community organizer in Chicago
before earning his law degree. He
worked as a civil rights attorney in
Chicago and taught constitutional law
at the University of Chicago Law
School from 1992 to 2004.
He served three terms representing the
13th District in the Illinois Senate
from 1997 to 2004.
Following an unsuccessful bid against
the Democratic incumbent for a seat in
the United States House of
Representatives in 2000, Obama ran for
the United States Senate in 2004.
Several events brought him to national
attention during the campaign,
including his victory in the March 2004
Illinois Democratic primary for the
Senate election and his keynote address
at the Democratic National Convention
in July 2004. He won election to the
U.S. Senate in Illinois in November
2004.
His presidential campaign began in
February 2007, and after a close
campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party
presidential primaries against Hillary
Rodham Clinton, he won his party's
nomination. In the 2008 presidential
election, he defeated Republican
nominee John McCain, and was
inaugurated as president on January 20,
2009. In October 2009, Obama was
named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
President Obama signed economic
stimulus legislation in the form of
the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act of 2009 and the Tax Relief,
Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization,
and Job Creation Act of 2010. Other
domestic policy initiatives include the
Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act, Frank Wall Street Reform and
Consumer Protection Act, the Don't Ask,
Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010 and the
Budget Control Act of 2011.
In foreign policy, he ended the war in
Iraq, increased troop levels in
Afghanistan, signed the New START arms
control treaty with Russia, ordered
enforcement of the UN-sanctioned no-fly
zone over Libya, and ordered the
military operation that resulted in the
death of Osama bin Laden.
In April 2011, he announced that he
would be running for re-election in
2012, and on November 6, 2012, he
defeated Republican nominee Mitt Romney
to win a second term.
