2021년 1월 20일에 취임한 미국의 제46대 대통령이다.
1973년부터 2009년까지 델라웨어주 연방 상원의원으로 재직했으며,
2009년부터 2017년까지 제47대 부통령을 지냈으며
2021년부터 제46대 미국 대통령으로 재임 중이다.
2017년 1월 12일, 퇴임을 앞두고 넬슨 록펠러(1977년),
휴버트 험프리(1980년, 추서)에 이어 부통령으로서는
역대 세 번째로 대통령 자유 훈장을 받았다.
바이든이 받은 것은 그 중에서도 특별훈장
(Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction)으로,
부통령으로서는 유일하며 역대 대통령 중에서도

[초기 생애]
조 바이든은 1942년 11월 20일, 펜실베이니아주 스크랜턴의
아일랜드계 로마 가톨릭 집안에서
조제프 로비넷 바이던 시니어(1915~2002)와
캐서린 유지니아 진 바이던(본명 Finnegan; 1917~2010)의
아들로 태어났다.
10세 때 부모를 따라 델라웨어주로 이주하여 그곳에서 성장하였다.

델라웨어 대학교에서 사학과 정치학을 전공한 후,
시러큐스 대학교에서 법학을 전공,
법학전문석사 학위를 얻었다.
델라웨어 주 변호사 자격을 얻고 윌밍턴에서 변호사로
활동하다가 곧 1970년 뉴캐슬 군 의회 의원으로
선출되어 공직 활동을 시작했다.

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (born November 20, 1942)
is an American politician who is the 46th and
current president of the United States.
A member of the Democratic Party,
he served as the 47th vice president from 2009 to 2017
under Barack Obama and represented Delaware
in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009.
Raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New Castle County,
Delaware, Biden studied at the University of
Delaware before earning his law degree
from Syracuse University in 1968. He was elected
a New Castle County Councillor in 1970,
and became the sixth-youngest senator in American history
when he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware in 1972.
Biden was a longtime member of the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee, and eventually its chairman.
He opposed the Gulf War in 1991, but supported expanding
the NATO alliance into Eastern Europe and its intervention
in the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. He supported
the resolution authorizing the Iraq War in 2002,
but opposed the surge of U.S. troops in 2007.
He also chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee
from 1987 to 1995, dealing with drug policy,
crime prevention, and civil liberties issues;
he led the effort to pass the Violent Crime Control
and Law Enforcement Act and the Violence Against Women Act,
and oversaw six U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings,
including the contentious hearings
for Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.
He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential
nomination in 1988 and again in 2008.
Biden was reelected to the Senate six times,
and was the fourth-most senior senator
when he resigned to serve as Barack Obama's vice president
after they won the 2008 presidential election;
Obama and Biden were reelected in 2012. As vice president,
Biden oversaw infrastructure spending in 2009
to counteract the Great Recession. His negotiations
with congressional Republicans helped pass legislation

In April 2019, Biden announced his candidacy
in the 2020 presidential election, and he reached
the delegate threshold needed to secure
the Democratic nomination in June 2020.
On August 11, he announced U.S. Senator Kamala Harris
of California as his running mate.
Biden defeated Trump in the November 3 election,
although Trump has refused to concede.

Taking office at age 78,
Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history,

of Ukraine by imposing sanctions on Russia and

During the 2023 Israel–Hamas war,
Biden announced American military support for Israel,
and condemned the actions of Hamas and
other Palestinian militants as terrorism.
In April 2023, he announced his candidacy
for the Democratic Party nomination
in the 2024 presidential election.
