4·19 혁명(四一九革命) 또는 4월 혁명(四月革命)은
1960년 4월 19일 대한민국에서 제1공화국 자유당 정권이
이기붕을 부통령으로 당선시키기 위한 개표조작을 하자,
이에 반발하여 부정선거 무효와 재선거를 주장하는
학생들의 시위에서 비롯된 혁명이다.
3·15 부정 선거의 무효와 재선거를 주장하던
3·15 마산 의거에 참여한 마산상업고등학교 입학생
김주열이 실종된 지 27일 후인 4월 11일 아침 마산
중앙부두 앞바다에서 왼쪽 눈에 경찰이 쏜 최루탄이 박힌 채

시신으로 떠오른 것이 부산일보를 통해 보도되면서
시위는 전국적으로 격화되었다.
4월 19일 경찰이 대통령 관저인 경무대로 몰려드는 시위대를
향해 발포하였고, 발포 이후 시위대는 무장하여 경찰과
총격전을 벌이며 맞섰다.
전국민적 저항과 군지휘부의 무력동원 거부에 봉착한
대통령 이승만이 4월 26일 하야를 발표함으로써
이승만의 자유당 정권은 몰락하였고,
이 혁명의 결과로 과도 정부를 거쳐 6월 15일(6·15 개헌)에
제2공화국이 출범하였다.

1960년 4월 19일 학생과 시민이 중심 세력이 되어 일으킨
반독재 민주주의 운동
이승만 정권은 1948년부터 1960년까지 발췌개헌,
사사오입 개헌 등 불법적인 개헌을 통해 12년간 장기 집권하였다.

그리고 1960.3.15 제 4대 정 부통령을 선출하기 위해 실시된
선거에서 자유당은 반공개 투표, 야당참관인 축출,
투표함 바꿔치기, 득표수 조작 발표 등 부정선거를 자행하였다.
그러자 같은 날 마산에서 시민들과 학생들이 부정선거를
규탄하는 격렬한 시위를 벌였고 당국은 총격과 폭력으로
강제 진압에 나서 다수의 사상자가 발생하였으며
무고한 학생과 시민을 공산당으로 몰면서 고문을 가했다.
이후 1960.4.11 1차 마산시위에서 실종되었던 김주열군이
눈에 최루탄이 박힌 채 참혹한 시체로 발견됨으로써
이에 분노한 시민들의 제 2차 시위가 다시 일어났다.
그리고 1960.4.18 고려대학교의 4천여 학생은
"진정한 민주이념의 쟁취를 위하여 봉화를 높이들자"는
선언문을 낭독, 국회의사당까지 진출하고 학교로
돌아가던 중 괴청년들의 습격을 받아 일부가 피를
흘리며 크게 부상당했다.
이에 분노한 전국의 시민과 학생이 다음날인 1960.4.19
총 궐기하여 "이승만 하야와 독재정권 타도 "를 위한
혁명적 투쟁으로 발전하여 독재정권은 총칼을
앞세운 무력으로 탄압하고 비상계엄령을 선포하였다.
1960.4.25 독재정권의 만행에 분노한 서울시내 각 대학
교수단 300여명은 선언문을 채택하고 학생, 시민들과 시위에
동참하였고 1960.4.26 전날에 이어 서울 시내를 가득 메운
대규모의 시위군중은 무력에도 굽히지 않고 더욱 완강하게
투쟁하여 이승만은 결국 대통령직에서 하야하였다.

April Revolution
The April Revolution, sometimes called
the April 19 Revolution or April 19 Movement,
was a popular uprising in April 1960, led by labor
and student groups, which overthrew the autocratic
First Republic of South Korea under Syngman Rhee.
It led to the resignation of Rhee and the transition
to the Second Republic of South Korea.
The events were touched off by the discovery
in Masan Harbor of the body of a high school student
killed by a tear-gas shell in demonstrations
against the elections of March 1960.

President Rhee had been in office since 1948,
but faced increasing domestic discontent as his rule
had delivered limited economic and social development,
while being perceived as corrupt with Rhee
amending the constitution to prolong his stay in power.
The U.S. had reduced its economic aid from
a high of $382,893,000 in 1957 to $222,204,000 in 1959.
Rhee was shocked and threatened by this reduced
American support and he began taking increasingly
desperate measures to ensure his political survival.
In December 1958 he forced through the National Assembly
an amendment to the National Security Law giving
the government broad new powers to curtail freedom
of the press and prevent members of the opposition from voting.
For the 1960 presidential election, two main parties
were running against Rhee. The small Progressive Party
which received one million votes in the 1956 presidential
election was represented by Cho Bong-am,
while the Democratic Party was represented by Cho Pyong-ok.
In July 1959 Rhee accused Cho Bong-am as being a Communist.
He was imprisoned and swiftly executed.
Cho Pyong-ok went to the United States for a stomach
operation but died there of a heart attack.
The death of these two competitors seemed too much
of a coincidence to the Korean public and they assumed
that the deaths were the result of corruption.
For the election of the vice president,
which was done separately in Korea,
Rhee was determined to see his protege Lee Ki-poong elected.
Lee ran against Chang Myon of the Democratic Party,
who was the former ambassador to the United States
during the Korean War. On March 15 Lee, who was mostly
bedridden, won the elections with an abnormally wide
margin, winning 8,225,000 votes, while Myon received
just 1,850,000 votes.
It became clear to the people that the vote was fraudulent.
According to the Korean Report,
Democratic rallies were prohibited throughout
the nation and hundreds of pre-marked ballots were stuffed
into ballots on election day.
