방송 카메라맨으로 입사했다.
1967년 초 홍콩의 동아시아 지부로 발령받아
베트남 전쟁을 취재했으며,
69년에는 사이공(현 호찌민)에서 부상을 당하기도 했다.
1973년 도쿄 지국으로 옮겨 89년까지
특파원으로 활동했다.
특히 1980년 5월 일본 특파원으로 재직할 당시
광주로 들어와 목숨을 걸고 계엄군에 의한
참사 현장을 기록, 독일 본사로 보내 광주의
비극을 전 세계에 알렸다.
같은 해 9월에는 김대중 전 대통령에 대한
사형 판결에 대한 항의 표시로 <기로에 선 한국>이라는
제목의 45분짜리 다큐멘터리를 제작하기도 했으며,
86년에는 서울 광화문 시위 현장에서 경찰에게
맞아 목과 척추에 중상을 입기도 했다.
1995년 은퇴한 힌츠페터는 '죽음의 공포를 무릅쓴
치열한 기자정신으로 한국인의 양심을 깨워
민주화를 앞당겼다.'는 공로로 2003년 11월 제2회
송건호언론상을 수상했다.
힌츠페터는 2016년 1월 독일 북부의 라체부르크에서
투병 끝에 78세를 일기로 별세했다.
한편, 힌츠페터의 손톱과 머리카락 등
유품이 2016년 5월 15일 광주 망월동
5 · 18 옛 묘역에 안치됐다.
힌츠페터는 생전에 "내가 죽거든 광주에 묻어달라."고
주변에 말해왔으며,
지난 2005년 광주 방문 당시에는 자신의
손톱과 머리카락 일부를 봉투에 담아
5 · 18 기념재단에 남긴 바 있다.

위르겐 힌츠페터(Jürgen Hinzpeter,
1937년 7월 6일 ~ 2016년 1월 25일)는
독일의 기자이자 언론인이다.
독일 제1공영방송 기자로서 5·18 광주 민주화 운동 현장을
영상에 담아 언론 통제로 인해 대한민국 내에서는
보도될 수 없었던 광주의 참상을 외국에 알리는 데
큰 기여를 하였는데,
자신이 촬영한 필름을 큰 금속캔
속에 포장해 과자더미 속에 숨겨서 일본으로 반출한 뒤
독일 함부르크의 뉴스센터에 전달하여,
이 영상은 독일에서 수차례 방송되었고
외국의 다른 언론들도 이 영상을 받아 보도함으로써
5·18 광주 민주화 운동이 전 세계에 알려지게 되었다.
이에 일명 '푸른 눈의 목격자'로 불린다.
학창 시절에는 의사가 되기를 선망했으나,
기자로 진로를 바꿔 1963년에 당시 서독의
독일 제1공영방송 함부르크 지국의 TV방송국
카메라맨으로 입사했다.
1967년 초 그 당시 제1공영방송에서 유일하게
동아시아 지부가 있던 홍콩으로 발령을 받았다.
그는 베트남 전쟁을 취재하다가,
1969년 봄에 사이공에서 부상을 당했다.
이후 독일 제1공영방송 도쿄 지국으로 옮겨가
1973년부터 1989년까지 17년간 특파원으로 근무했다.
독일 제1공영방송의 일본특파원으로 지내는 동안
그는 몇 차례 한국을 방문했다.
박정희 정권하의 여러 공안사건들에 대한 기록과
광주민주화운동 직전 가택연금 중인
김영삼과의 인터뷰 등을 녹음했다.
광주민주화운동이 진행 중이던 5월 19일에 일본에서
광주 잠입을 준비한뒤 20일 오전에 광주로 진입한다.
23일까지 한국에 잠입하여 위험을 무릅쓰고
현장을 취재하여 광주의 참상을 카메라에 담았다.
이 당시 그는 기자생활 이례 민주화운동만큼이나
끔찍하고 참혹한 현장은 처음 봤으며
영상을 찍다가도 몇번이나 눈물이 터져나와
촬영이 중단됐다고 한다.
힌츠페터가 보낸 필름은 독일 제1공영방송을 통해
여러 나라에 즉시 보도됐으며,
그 해 9월에는 《기로에 선 한국》이란 제목의
다큐멘터리로 제작 방송되었다.
이 다큐멘터리는 언론 통제하의 5공화국 시절의
대한민국 내에서는 비밀리에 알려져 상영됐다.
오늘날 광주민주화운동 관련 영상자료는
대부분 그가 수집한 것이다.
5공 말기인 1986년 11월에는 광화문 네거리에서
시위 취재 도중 사복경찰에게 구타당하여
목과 척추에 중상을 입었다.
1995년 기자직에서 은퇴한 이후에는
오스트리아의 잘츠부르크에 거주하였다.
2003년 5월 18일 힌츠페터가 광주에서 찍은 영상은
KBS 1TV 《일요스페셜》 〈80년 5월 - 푸른 눈의 목격자〉
편에서 공개됐다.
2004년 지병인 심장질환으로 일시적으로
생명이 위독했던 그는 사후 국립5.18민주묘지에
묻히고 싶다는 소망을 밝혀
광주민주화운동 유족회 및 광주광역시 등 관련 단체들이
그의 명예시민증 부여와 안장을 추진했다.
극적으로 건강을 회복한 그는 이후 광주민주화운동
25주년 기념식에 참석하고,
회고록을 집필하는 등 지속적인 활동을 펼쳤다.
2005년 5월 19일 한국방송카메라기자협회는
그에게 특별상을 수여했다.

Jürgen Hinzpeter (6 July 1937 – 25 January 2016)
was a German journalist best known for his coverage
of South Korean topics.
Hinzpeter was a reporter for the ARD and the only journalist
to film the massacres during the Gwangju uprising
in South Korea in 1980.
His footage was delivered to Germany and broadcast worldwide.
He reported about the student uprising and
the leader Kim Dae-jung who later became President of South Korea.
In Gwangju there is a memorial honoring Hinzpeter erected
by the May 18 Memorial Foundation.
[Career]
Hinzpeter was eager to become a doctor during his school days,
but joined the Hamburg branch of ARD,
Germany's regional public-service broadcaster,
as the TV station cameraman in 1963,
changing his career path to journalism.
In early 1967, he was assigned to Hong Kong,
where the ARD had its only branch in East Asia.
Covering the Vietnam War, he was injured in Saigon
in the spring of 1967.
After that, he transferred to the Tokyo branch of
the ARD and worked as a correspondent there for
nearly 17 years from 1973 to 1989.
Hinzpeter visited Korea several times as
the ARD's Japanese correspondent.
He recorded a large number of public security incidents
under the Park Chung Hee regime and did interviews
with Kim Young-sam, who was under house arrest
just before the 18 May Democratic Uprising.
On 19 May 1980, when the Democratic Uprising was in progress,
Paul Schneiss, Pastor of the East Asia Germany Mission,
arranged for Hinzpeter to go to Gwangju from Japan.
On the early morning of 20 May he covertly entered Gwangju.
Hinzpeter filmed the Kwangju massacre,
where young people were beaten with billy clubs and
trampled underfoot, and the bodies of other young people
were seen in the provincial government building,
on ten rolls of film.
Smuggling out his film, Hinzpeter hid it
in a big metal can of biscuits decorated
to look like a wedding gift.
He flew to Tokyo and sent the film to Germany.
Hinzpeter returned to Gwangju on 23 May to photograph
the liberation of Gwangju,
when martial law was withdrawn and the citizens'
local self-government was formed.
He was emotionally shaken by the brutal events he witnessed.
Hinzpeter's film was immediately shared with
many countries through the ARD,
and it was incorporated in and broadcast
as a documentary titled Korea standing at a crossroads
in September of that year.
The documentary was secretly screened in
the Fifth Republic of Korea,
where the media was being tightly controlled at the time.
Most of the video materials related to
the Gwangju Democratization Movement known today
were collected by Hinzpeter.
Covering protests at Gwanghwamun intersection in November 1986,
the end of the republic, Hinzpeter was beaten
by plainclothes officers and received a neck spine injury.
After retiring from journalism in 1995,
he settled in Ratzeburg, Germany.
The video taken by Hinzpeter at Gwangju was released
in an episode of KBS 1TV's Sunday Special in 2003
entitled "May 1980 - Blue Eyed Witnesses"

The 2017 film A Taxi Driver centers on Kim Man-seob,
a dramatization of the taxi driver who helped Hinzpeter
during the uprising.

In 2003, Hinzpeter was awarded the "Song Gun-ho Press Award"
by the South Korean journalist association in recognition of
his contribution to the South Korean democratization movement.
On 19 May 2005, he was awarded a special prize
by the Korea Broadcast Camera Journalists Association.
[Later life and death]
With his chronic heart disease temporarily putting him
in a life-threatening condition in 2004,
Hinzpeter revealed his desire to be buried
in Gwangju after his death.
Dramatically recovering his health,
he attended the twenty-fifth ceremony
for the Democratic Uprising and continued his activities,
including writing his memoirs.
Hinzpeter died on 25 January 2016,
at the age of 78 at the University of Lübeck in Germany.
Another source said that he died in his hometown of Ratzeburg,
northern Germany.
Though he had expressed the desire to be buried in Gwangju,
his family did not honor that wish.
Instead, a memorial tombstone containing his nail clippings
and hair, which Hinzpeter had left in the city in 2005,
was installed in a special memorial garden in Gwangju
by the May 18 Memorial Foundation on 16 May 2016.
