베르가모 출생. 베르가모의 음악학교와 볼로냐의
음악원에서 공부하였으나, 그를 법률가로 키우려던
부친과의 불화로 군에 입대하여 1818년 군인 신분으로 발표한
《볼로냐의 엔리코》가 호평을 받아 작곡가의
길을 걷게 되었다. 출세작이 된 것은 1830년에 작곡한
《아나 볼레나》이며, 이 작품으로 그는 세상에
널리 알려지게 되었다.
1835년 파리로 나가 오페라 작가로서의 기반을 굳히고
1840년 전후는 그의 창작력이 가장 왕성했던 시기였으나,
1845년 두통에서 비롯된 신체 마비상태에 빠져,
회복하지 못한 채 고향 베르가모에서 사망하였다.
19세기 초 이탈리아의 오페라는 오페라부파에서
오페라세리아로의 전환기였으며,
그는 바로 이 전환점에 위치하는 작곡가였다.
따라서 그의 오페라는 오페라부파의 마지막

19세기 전반 벨칸토 오페라를 주도하였다.
[생애]
도니체티는 1797년 베르가모에서 음악과
전혀 상관없는 가난한 집안의 아들로 태어났다.
그의 아버지는 마을 전당포의 관리인이며,
도니체티는 세 아들 중 막내였다.
그러나 도니체티는 베르가모를 대표하는
가톨릭 교회의 성직자 죠반니 시모네
마이르에게서 음악 수업을 듣기 시작했다.
볼로냐 음악원에서 로시니의 후배이며,
처음에는 로시니의 모방에 그치고 있었으나,
로시니가 오페라 창작의 붓을 놓은 뒤부터
두각을 나타내게 되었다.
아버지의 의향에 반하여 음악가를 지망하였기
때문에 생활을 위해 군에 입대하였고,
군무의 틈을 타 오페라 작곡에 힘썼다.
1823년 25세로 제대, 오페라 작곡가로서
입신하여 이탈리아 각지에서 해마다
새 작품을 발표하여 점차 지위를 굳혔다.
로시니 이상으로 속필이며,
로시니가 <세비야의 이발사>를 쓰는 데
13일간이나 걸렸다니 정말
게으름쟁이라고 했다는 이야기가 전해지고 있다.

1830년대에 들어서 기법은 원숙하여
오페라 부파로는 <사랑의 묘약>(1832),
<연대의 딸>(1840), <돈 파스콸레>(1843) 등을
내놓았고 한편 오페라 세리아로는

<람메르무어의 루치아>(1835) 등을 남겼다.

빈이나 파리에서도 활약했지만 1845년경부터
신경성 마비로 고향인 베르가모로 돌아와
1848년 4월 8일 50세로 세상을 떠났다.
도니체티의 오페라는 명가수가 배출된
시대에 작곡되었기 때문에 성악의 기교를
과시하고 있는 것이 눈에 띄며 그것은
예컨대 <루치아>의 유명한 <광란의 장>에서
전형을 볼 수가 있다.

Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti
(29 November 1797 ~ 8 April 1848) was an Italian composer.
Along with Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini,
Donizetti was a leading composer
of the bel canto opera style during
the first half of the nineteenth century. Donizetti's close
association with the bel canto style was undoubtedly
an influence on other composers such as Giuseppe Verdi
(1813~1901).

Donizetti was born in Bergamo in Lombardy.
Although he did not come from a musical background,
at an early age he was taken under
the wing of composer Simon Mayr who had enrolled
him by means of a full scholarship in a school
which he had set up. There he received detailed
training in the arts of fugue and counterpoint.
Mayr was also instrumental in obtaining a place
for the young man at the Bologna Academy, where,
at the age of 19, he wrote his first one-act opera,
the comedy Il Pigmalione, which may not
have ever been performed during his lifetime.

Over the course of his career,
Donizetti wrote almost 70 operas.
An offer in 1822 from Domenico Barbaja,
the impresario of the Teatro di San Carlo
in Naples, which followed the composer's ninth opera,
led to his move to that city and his residency
there which lasted until the production of
Caterina Cornaro in January 1844. In all,
Naples presented 51 of Donizetti's operas.
Before 1830, success came primarily with
his comic operas, the serious ones failing
to attract significant audiences.
However, his first notable success came
with an opera seria, Zoraida di Granata,
which was presented in 1822 in Rome. In 1830,
when Anna Bolena was premiered, Donizetti made
a major impact on the Italian and international
opera scene and this shifted the balance of
success away from primarily comedic operas,
although even after that date, his best-known works
included comedies such as L'elisir d'amore (1832)
and Don Pasquale (1843).
Significant historical dramas did appear and
became successful; they included Lucia di Lammermoor
(the first to have a libretto written by Salvadore Cammarano)
given in Naples in 1835, and one of the most
successful Neapolitan operas, Roberto Devereux
in 1837. Up to that point, all of his operas
had been set to Italian libretti.
Donizetti found himself increasingly chafing
against the censorial limitations which existed
in Italy (and especially in Naples).
From about 1836, he became interested in working
in Paris, where he saw much greater freedom
to choose subject matter, in addition
to receiving larger fees and greater prestige.
From 1838 onward, with an offer from the Paris Opera
for two new works, he spent a considerable period
of the following ten years in that city,
and set several operas to French texts
as well as overseeing staging of his Italian works.
The first opera was a French version of
the then-unperformed Poliuto which, in April 1840,
was revised to become Les martyrs.
Two new operas were also given in Paris at that time.

As the 1840s progressed, Donizetti moved
regularly between Naples, Rome, Paris,
and Vienna continuing to compose and stage
his own operas as well as those of other composers.
But from around 1843, severe illness began
to take hold and to limit his activities.
Eventually, by early 1846 he was obliged
to be confined to an institution for
the mentally ill and, by late 1847,
friends had him moved back to Bergamo,
where he died in April 1848.
