로널드 윌슨 레이건(Ronald Wilson Reagan,
1911년 2월 6일~2004년 6월 5일)은
미국의 40대(1981년 ~ 1989년) 대통령과
33대 캘리포니아 주지사를 지낸 정치인이다.
레이건은 일리노이 주 화이트사이드 컨트리에 있는
탬피코에서 태어났고,
일리노이 주 리 컨트리에 있는 딕손에서 자랐으며,
일리노이 주 유레카 대학에서 경제학과 사회학으로
문학사를 취득하였다.
졸업 후에 레이건은 처음으로 일리노이 주를 떠나
아이오와로 가서 라디오 방송국에서 일했으며,
1937년에는 캘리포니아 주 로스앤젤레스로 자리를 옮겼다.

1911년, 일리노이 주 탬피코에서 가난한 구두 판매원의
둘째 아들로 태어났다.
1932년 유레카대학 경제학과를 졸업한 후 아나운서로 일하였다.
1937년 할리우드에 들어가 1964년까지 《Kings Row》(1942년) 등
약 50편의 영화에 출연하였으나 특별한 주목을 받지 못하였다.
1947년 미국노동총연맹 산하 영화배우협회 회장에 선출되었다.
처음에는 민주당의 대통령 프랭클린 루스벨트를 지지하였으나,
1950년대 초부터 차츰 보수적 입장으로 기울어졌다.
1949년에는 제인 와이먼과 이혼하였고 3년뒤인 1952년에
낸시 데이비스와 재혼하였다.
[강경 보수 대통령]
제2차 세계대전 때에는 공군 기지의 부관으로 종군하였고,
1962년, 공화당에 가입하였고 강경한 보수주의자로
사회복지제도에 매우 비판적이었다.
1966년에는 캘리포니아주의 주지사로 당선되어
조세감면, 복지제도의 축소, 고등교육정책에 힘을 쏟았고
캘리포니아주의 재정을 적자에서 흑자로 바꾸었다.
1968년 공화당 대통령 후보로 나섰으며
1976년 공화당 대통령후보지명대회에서 당시 대통령이었던
제럴드 포드에게 패하였으나,
1980년에 공화당 대통령후보로 지명되어
경제불황으로 인기가 추락했던 당시 민주당의 대통령 지미 카터를
압도적인 표차로 누르고 제40대 대통령에 당선되었다.
[암살 시도]
1981년 3월에는 힐튼 호텔에서 노동계 지도자들과
오찬을 마치고 떠나던 도중 정신질환자였던
존 힝클리(John Hinckley)에게 저격을 당했으나
총알이 심장에서 12cm 떨어진 곳을 아슬아슬하게 통과하여
가까스로 목숨을 건져 역대 미국 대통령 중 최초로
테쿰세의 저주를 피해간 대통령이 되었다.
이 저격사건으로 인해 경호원이었던 팀 매카시(Tim McCarthy)도
몸으로 레이건을 막아 부상을 당했으나 회복되었다.
당시 존 힝클리는 범행 이유에 대해
'당시 유명 영화배우였던 조디 포스터(Alicia Christian Foster)의
관심을 끌기 위해서였다'고 범행 이유를 자백하였고,
정신병을 앓고 있었던 점과 대통령이 무사하다는 점이
정상 참작되어 1982년, 무죄 판결을 받고
세인트 엘리자베스 정신병원으로 이송되었다.
[보수강경 국내외 정책]
레이건은 대통령으로 재임하면서 보수적이고 강경한
국내외정책을 펼쳐 1984년 대통령선거에서
민주당 후보 월터 먼데일에게 압승을 거두면서 재선에 성공하였다.
그러나 조세감면과 사회복지 지출을 억제한
'레이거노믹스'의 결과 재정 및 무역 적자를 초래하였고
대외정책에서 레바논 파병과 리비아 폭격,
냉전체제가 공산권의 사멸로 끝났으니 국방비를
복지비용으로 전환해야 한다는 비평을 억누르려는 그레나다 침공,
니카라과 반군지원 등으로 제3세계 국가들에게 위협을 주었고
포클랜드 전쟁에서는 우방국인 영국을 옹호하였으며
아르헨티나를 테러집단으로 규정하기도 하였다.
그러나 이 사건으로 인하여 중남미에서는 레이건이 마가렛 대처의
정부라는 소문을 퍼뜨리는 등 레이건에 대한 비난이 끊이지 않았다.
1986년 '이란 - 콘트라 사건'으로 인기가 떨어지자
소비에트 연방에 대해 유화정책을 펴기 시작하였다.
1987년 12월에는 소련의 고르바초프 서기장과
'중거리핵전력폐기조약'(INF Treaty)을 맺어 냉전을 종식시켰고
1988년 대통령선거에서는 부통령이었던 조지 허버트 워커 부시를
도와 공화당 재집권에 성공하였으며 1989년에 퇴임하였다.
[최후]
그는 공화당을 더욱 강경한 보수주의로 이끌었던
미국 보수주의운동 진영에서 배출한 최초의 대통령으로,
미국 역대 대통령 중 가장 많은 나이인 70세의 나이로 취임한
대통령이기도 했으며,
최초로 이혼 경력이 있는 미국 대통령이기도 하였다.
그 후, 퇴임한 지 5년이 지난 1994년 11월,
알츠하이머병 초기 진단을 받고 10년간 투병해 온 그는
2004년 6월 5일 캘리포니아의 자택에서 94세를 일기로 타계했다.
2011년, 갤럽(Gallup)의 여론조사에서는
미국인이 생각하는 가장 위대한 대통령으로
레이건이 19%를 득표하며 1위를 기록하였다.
2위는 14%를 기록한 링컨이었다.

Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911
~ June 5, 2004) was an American politician and actor,
who served as the 40th President of the United States
from 1981 to 1989. Prior to his presidency,
he served as the 33rd Governor of California
from 1967 to 1975, following a career as an actor
and union leader in Hollywood.
Raised in a poor family in small towns of Northern Illinois,
Ronald Reagan graduated from Eureka College in 1932
and worked as a sports announcer
on several regional radio stations.
After moving to Hollywood in 1937,
he became an actor and starred in a few major productions.
Reagan was twice elected as President
of the Screen Actors Guild, the labor
union for actors, where he worked to
root out Communist influence. In the
1950s, he moved into television
and was a motivational speaker at
General Electric factories.
Having been a lifelong liberal Democrat, his views
changed. He became a conservative and in 1962 switched
to the Republican Party. In 1964, Reagan's speech,
"A Time for Choosing", in support of Barry Goldwater's
floundering presidential campaign,
earned him national attention as a new
conservative spokesman. Building a
network of supporters, he was elected
Governor of California in 1966.
As governor, Reagan raised taxes,
turned a state budget deficit to a
surplus, challenged the protesters at
the University of California, ordered
National Guard troops in during a
period of protest movements in 1969,
and was re-elected in 1970.
He twice ran unsuccessfully for the Republican
nominations in 1968 and 1976; four
years later, he easily won the
nomination outright, going on to be
elected the oldest President, defeating
incumbent Jimmy Carter in 1980.
Entering the presidency in 1981, Reagan
implemented sweeping new political and
economic initiatives. His supply-side
economic policies, ubbed "Reaganomics",
advocated tax rate reduction to spur
economic growth, control of the money supply
to curb inflation, economic deregulation,
and reduction in government spending.
In his first term he survived an
assassination attempt, escalated the
War on Drugs, and fought
public-sector labor. Over his two
terms, his economic policies saw a
reduction of inflation
from 12.5% to 4.4%, and an average
annual growth of real GDP of 3.44%;
while Reagan did enact cuts in domestic
discretionary spending, increased
military spending contributed to
increased federal outlays overall,
even after adjustment for inflation.
During his reelection bid,
Reagan campaigned on the notion that it
was "Morning in America", winning a
landslide in 1984 with the largest
electoral college victory in history.
Foreign affairs dominated his second
term, including ending of the Cold War,
the bombing of Libya, and the Iran
–Contra affair. Publicly describing the
Soviet Union as an "evil empire",
he transitioned Cold War policy from
detente to rollback, by escalating an
arms race with the USSR while engaging
in talks with Soviet General Secretary
Mikhail Gorbachev, which culminated in
the INF Treaty, shrinking both
countries' nuclear arsenals.
During his famous speech at the
Brandenburg Gate, President Reagan
challenged Soviet leader
Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this
wall!" Months after the end of his
term, the Berlin Wall fell and the
Soviet Union collapsed soon thereafter.
Leaving office in 1989, Reagan held an
approval rating of sixty-eight percent,
matching those of Franklin D. Roosevelt,
and later Bill Clinton, as the highest ratings for
departing presidents in the modern era.
While having planned an active post-presidency,
in 1994 Reagan disclosed his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease
earlier that year, appearing publicly for the last time
at the funeral of Richard Nixon; he died ten years later
at the age of 93.
An icon among Republicans, he ranks favorably in
public and critical opinion of
U.S. Presidents, and his tenure
constituted a realignment toward
conservative policies in the United States.
