휴렛패커드(Hewlett-Packard Co.:HP)는

1939년 캘리포니아주(州) 팰로앨토에서
스탠퍼드대학교·매사추세츠공과대학 출신의
엔지니어 빌 휴렛(Bill Hewlett)과 대학동문인
데이비드 패커드(David Packard)가 차고를 빌려
음향발진기(Resistance Capacity Audio Oscillator)를
생산하면서 시작되었다.
음향발진기 모델 200A는 휴렛이 대학 재학시절부터
디자인해온 것으로, 시간·온도의 변화에 따라 변하는
음성신호를 자동조절하여 원음을 재생시키는 일종의
피드백시스템으로 가격·크기·성능면에서 압도적인 제품이었다.
이를 당시 만화영화 제작으로 유명한 월트디즈니가 만화영화
《판타지아》 제작에 필요한 모델 200B를 납품받음으로써
휴렛-패커드의 존재를 널리 알려주었다.
1950년에는 종업원 150명에 생산제품 70종으로 급성장하였으며
이때 생산 주종은 신개발품인 마이크로파를 이용한
무선통신 계측장비였다.
이것은 주파수별로 신호를 분석하는 스펙트럼 분석기로서,
고주파 측정시간을 1/5이나 단축시킨 기술혁신 제품이었기
때문에 주문이 쇄도, 세계적 기업으로 키우는 발판이 되었다.
1960년대에는 컴퓨터와 계측기를 접목시킨 신제품의 개발,
초음파 진단시스템 개발 등 기술력을 갖춘
휴렛과 경영의 천재라는 패커드가 시의적절하게 계속
신제품을 발표, 첨단 계측기시장을 석권하였다.
1959년 스위스의 제네바에 유럽 마케팅본부와 서독에
처음 현지 생산공장을 세웠다.
이후 미국 실리콘밸리의 유명한 시조 및
세계 벤처기업(벤처비즈니스) 제1호가 되었고,
휴렛과 패커드가 연구를 위해 처음 작업을 시작한 차고는
정보혁명의 산실로서
'실리콘밸리의 탄생지(Birthplace of Silicon Valley)'라는
이름으로 유적지가 되었다.

컴퓨터를 비롯한 주변기기, 전자측정 및 계측장비와

1984년에는 한국에도 한국휴렛팩커드를 설립하였고,
프랑스·영국·이탈리아·캐나다·싱가포르·말레이시아·
중국·인도·브라질·멕시코 등지에서도 합작생산을 하고 있다.
본사는 캘리포니아주 팰로앨토에 있다.
2002년 컴팩을 인수하였다.

2014년 11월자로 분사를 확정지었다.
기존의 프린터와 PC 사업부는 HP Inc.로,
주주 가치를 제고하는 한편, 3D 프린팅 등 신시장 사업에
초점을 맞출 예정이며,
기업용 컴퓨팅 관련 사업은 휴렛 팩커드 엔터프라이즈로 분리되어
급변하는 클라우드 시장에 대한 독자적인 전략과 사업에
초점을 맞추게 된다.
결국 HP는 2015년 11월 1일 프린터·PC 사업부가 포함되는
HP 주식회사와 기업 하드웨어·서비스를 담당하는
휴렛 팩커드 엔터프라이즈로 분사하였다.
2015년 당시 포츈 500 기업 중 19위 기업의 유례 없는
대형 분사 프로젝트였다.
HP Inc.는
5만 명의 직원 규모로 가정용, 업무용 컴퓨터와
프린터 사업에 초점을 맞추게 되었다.
휴렛 팩커드 엔터프라이즈는
25만 명의 직원 규모로, 기업용 컴퓨팅 하드웨어, 소프트웨어,
서버, 하이브리드 클라우드에 초점을 맞추게 되었다.
2017년 HPE는 엔터프라이즈 서비스 비즈니스를 분사하고
Computer Sciences Corporation 과 합병하여
DXC Technology가 되었다.
또한 2017년에는 소프트웨어 사업 부문을 분사하여
Micro Focus 와 합병했다.
HPE는 총 수익 기준으로 2018 Fortune 500 대
미국 최대 기업 목록 에서 107위에 올랐다.

William "Bill" Redington Hewlett (May 20, 1913 ~
January 12, 2001) was an American engineer and
the co-founder, with David Packard,
of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP).
[Early life and education]
Hewlett was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan
where his father taught at the University of
Michigan Medical School.
In 1916 the family moved to San Francisco after
his father, Albion Walter Hewlett,
took a similar position at Stanford Medical School,
located at the time in San Francisco.
He attended Lowell High School and was accepted at
Stanford University as a favor to his late father
who had died of a brain tumor in 1925.
Hewlett received his Bachelor's degree
from Stanford University in 1934,
a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering
from MIT in 1936, and the degree of Electrical Engineer
from Stanford in 1939.
He joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity during his time at
Stanford.
In 1999, the William R. Hewlett Teaching Center
at Stanford was named in his honor.
The building is located in the Science and Engineering Quad,
adjacent to the David Packard Electrical Engineering Building.

Hewlett attended undergraduate classes taught
by Fred Terman at Stanford and became acquainted with
David Packard.
Packard and he began discussing forming a company
in August 1937, and founded Hewlett-Packard Company
as a partnership on January 1, 1939.
A flip of a coin decided the ordering of their names.
The company incorporated in 1947 and tendered an
initial public offering in 1957.
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard were very proud of
their company culture which came to be known as the HP Way.
The HP Way is a corporate culture that claimed
to be not only centered on making money but also
respecting and nurturing its employees.
Hewlett was president of the Institute
of Radio Engineers in 1954.
Also in 1939 he married Flora Lamson Hewlett,
and the couple eventually had 5 children:
Eleanor, Walter, James, William and Mary.
There are 12 grandchildren.
He was president of HP from 1964 to 1977,
and served as CEO from 1968 to 1978,
when he was succeeded by John A. Young.
He remained chairman of the executive committee until 1983,
and then served as vice chairman of the board until 1987.
A young Steve Jobs, then age 12, called
Hewlett (whose number was in the phone
book) and requested any available parts
for a frequency counter he was
building. Hewlett, impressed with Jobs' gumption,
offered him a summer job assembling frequency counters.
Jobs then considered HP one of the companies
that he admired, regarding it among the handful of
companies (Disney and Intel were the others)
that were built “to last, not just to make money".
[Personal life]
In 1966, Hewlett and his wife founded
the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation. Flora Lamson Hewlett died
in 1977. In 1978, Hewlett married
Rosemary Bradford Hewlett.
He died of heart failure in Palo Alto,
California, on January 12, 2001, and
was interred at Los Gatos Memorial
Park, San Jose, California.
