중일 전쟁(中日戰爭)은 1937년 7월 7일
일본의 중국 대륙 침략으로 시작되어
1945년 제2차 세계 대전이 끝날 때까지 계속된
중화민국과 일본제국 사이의 전쟁이다.
중화인민공화국에서는 중국 항일 전쟁(中國抗日戰爭),
일본에서는 일중 전쟁 (日中戦争) 혹은 지나 사변,
서양에서는 제2차 중일 전쟁
(Second Sino-Japanese War)이라고 부른다.
중일 전쟁은 20세기 아시아 최대 규모의 전쟁이었다.
1931년 이후로 두 나라 사이에 간헐적으로 교전이 있었으나,
전면전은 1937년 이후로 시작되었으며,
일본의 연합국에 대한 항복과 함께
1945년 9월 2일 종료되었다.
전쟁은 수십 년간 계속되어 온
일본의 제국주의 정책의 결과였으며,
원료와 자원을 확보하기 위해
중국을 정치·군사적으로 지배하려는 속셈에서 비롯되었다.
중국의 민족주의와 민족자결주의는
전쟁을 중국의 승리로 이끌었다.
1937년 이전에는 양쪽이 다양한 이유로
소규모, 국지적 전투를 벌였다.
1931년 9월 18일 일본은 만주 사변을 일으켰고,
그 연장에서 일어난 1937년의 루거우 다리 사건
(盧溝橋事件, 노구교 사건)으로
두 나라 간의 전면전이 시작되었다.
1937년부터 1941년까지의 기간에는
중국이 단독으로 일본에 맞섰으나,
진주만 공격 후 중일 전쟁은 더 큰 규모의
제2차 세계 대전에 포함되었다.
이후 일본군의 전력은 급속히 쇠퇴했고
1944년 즈음에 일본은 이른바 '대륙타통작전'을 개시하면서
반격을 꾀했으나 실효를 거두지 못했고,
1945년 8월 15일 천황 히로히토가 연합군에게 발표한
무조건 항복 선언과 같은 해 9월 2일 연합국에 대한
일본의 항복문서 조인식을 끝으로 중일전쟁 역시 종결되었다.

중일전쟁 [2nd Sino-Japanese War]
1937년 7월 7일의 노구교(盧溝橋, 베이징 교외)사건을
계기로 시작된 1945년 9월 2일의 일본 항복
(법적으로는 1972년 9월 29일의 중일공동성명)까지 계속된
중일간의 전면전쟁이다.
1931년 9월 18일의 만주사변을 기점으로 한 경우
일본에서는 ‘15년 전쟁’ 혹은 ‘아시아태평양전쟁’,
중국에서는 ‘항일전쟁’ 혹은 ‘
제2차 중일전쟁’ 이라고 한다.
노구교사건 후 현지에서 정전협정이 성립하였지만
일본정부는 사건을 중국측의 계획적 무력항일이라고 단정하고
총공세를 개시하여 8월 상해에 전투병력을 확대하였다.
일본측은 당초 이 전쟁을 ‘북지(北支)사변’이라고 하였지만
후에 ‘지나(支那)사변’으로 개칭하였다.
정식의 선전포고를 하지 않고
1941년 12월 태평양전쟁 개시후 대(對)미국ㆍ영국전쟁과
지나사변을 포함하여 ‘대동아(大東亞)전쟁’으로 호칭하였다.
일본의 군사행동확대는 중국문제를 일거에 유리하게
해결하려는 호기를 노린 일본의 야심과
우세한 군사력의 일격으로 중국측을 단기간에
굴복시킬 수 있다는 오산에 기초하였다.
중국측은 항전준비의 부족에도 불구하고
일본측의 예상에 반하여 항일의 전의를 굳히고
1937년 9월 제2차 국공합작이 성립하여
항일 민족통일전선이 형성되었다.
12월의 남경점령 후 일본군은 10만을 넘는
중국 군민을 참살하는 남경학살사건을 일으켜
국제여론의 비난을 초래하여
중국민중의 항일의식을 더욱 고양시켰다.
주화(駐華) 독일 대사 트라우트만의 중개에 의한
‘화평공작(和平工作)’을 일본측은 1938년 1월 단행하여
‘국민정부를 대상으로 하지 않는다’는
제1차 근위(近衛)성명을 발표하고,
협상에 의한 해결의 길을 스스로 포기하였다.
일본이 옹립한 화북(華北)과 화중(華中)의 괴뢰정권은
민중의 지지를 얻지 못하고
일본군 점령지는 주요도시와 철도연변의 ‘점과 선’에 그쳤으며,
배후의 광대한 농촌지대에서는 중국 공산당군을
중심으로 하는 유격전이 전개되었다.
1938년 10월의 무한(武漢) 점령 후 전선은
교착상태에 빠졌으며 통일전선 내의 국공(國共) 양군의
대립이 격화하여 분열의 위기에 직면하였다.
일본은 국민정부 내의 대일 타협파에 대한 ‘화평공작’을
활성화시키고, 왕조명(汪兆銘) 등은 국민정부로부터 탈락하여
일본 점령하의 남경에 1940년 3월 ‘남경정부`를 수립하였으나,
국민의 지지를 얻지 못하였다.
독일ㆍ일본ㆍ이탈리아 3국 동맹을 체결한 일본은
미일협상 중에 일본군의 중국철수를 요구한
미국의 주장을 받아들이지 않고
1941년 태평양전쟁에 돌입하였다.
일본군은 三光 작전 등의 잔악한 행위로
중국의 대항전력을 철저히 파괴하려고 했으나
성공하지 못하고 1945년 110만의 병력을
중국에 남기고 항복하였다.
이로 인한 일본의 침략전쟁으로 중국국민의 사상자는
1,000만 명을 넘어섰다.

The Second Sino-Japanese War
(July 7, 1937 – September 9, 1945), so
named due to the First Sino-Japanese
War of 1894–95, was a military conflict
fought primarily between the Republic
of China and the Empire of Japan from 1937 to 1941.
China fought Japan, with
some economic help from Germany (see
Sino-German cooperation until 1941),
the Soviet Union and the United States.
After the Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor in 1941, the war would merge
into the greater conflict of World War
II as a major front of what is broadly
known as the Pacific War.
The Second Sino-Japanese War was the largest Asian
war in the 20th century. It also made
up more than 90% of the casualties in
the Pacific War. (see World War II

The war was the result of a decades-
long Japanese imperialist policy aimed
at expanding its influence politically
and militarily in order to secure
access to raw material reserves and
other economic resources in the area,
particularly food and labour, and
engage war with others in the policy
context of aggressive modernized
militarism in the Asia-Pacific, at the
height of Imperial Rule Assistance
Association's Hideki Tojo cabinet and
with the order from Emperor Shōwa.
Before 1937, China and Japan fought in
small, localized engagements, so-called "incidents".
In 1931, the Japanese invasion of Manchuria by
Japan's Kwantung Army followed the
Mukden Incident. The last of these
incidents was the Marco Polo Bridge
Incident of 1937, which marked the
beginning of total war between the two
countries.
Initially the Japanese scored major
victories, such as the Shanghai, and by
the end of 1937 captured the Chinese
capital of Nanking. After failing to
stop the Japanese in Wuhan, the Chinese
central government was relocated to
Chongqing in the Chinese interior.
By 1939, after Chinese victories in
Changsha and Guangxi, and with
stretched lines of communications deep
into the Chinese interior territories,
the war had reached a stalemate. The
Japanese were also unable to defeat the
Chinese communist forces in Shaanxi,
which continued to perform sabotage
operations against the Japanese using
guerrilla warfare tactics.
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor, and the following day (December
8, 1941) the United States declared war
on Japan. The United States began to
aid China via airlift materiel over the
Himalayas after the Allied defeat in
Burma that closed the Burma Road. In
1944 Japan launched a massive invasion
and conquered Henan and Changsha.
However, this failed to bring about the
surrender of Chinese forces. Despite
continuing to occupy Chinese territory,
Japan eventually surrendered on
September 2, 1945 to Allied forces
following the atomic bombings of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet
invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria.
The remaining Japanese occupation
troops in China (excluding Manchuria)
formally surrendered on September 9,
1945 with the following International
Military Tribunal for the Far East
convened on April 29, 1946.
At the outcome of the Cairo Conference of
November 22–26, 1943, the Allies of
World War II decided to restrain and
punish the aggression of Japan by
restoring all the territories Japan
annexed in China, including Manchuria,
Formosa, and the Pescadores, to the
Republic of China, and to expel Japan
from the Korean Peninsula.
